Officers Briefing Room
-Directly off of the Main Bridge-

((Ilithi: For everyone's reference, the bridge module layout posted in the Fearless topic includes the Senior Briefing Room, which is an accurate representation of the Fearless' Senior Briefing Room, minus the addition of a replicator station on the starboard side. The 'head' of the table is the center of the short side, so the Captain would have his back to the large view ports comprising the aft bulkhead, facing forward. The XO would be seated to the Captain's right, and the 2O to the Captain's left. The next two senior most officers take the end seats, with the remainder filling in the four seats on the long side (the captain and four most senior department heads having the privilege of not having to turn their chairs around to see the viewscreen on the forward bulkhead). Officer seniority (by date of rank) is as follows: Lt. Cmdr. Prim, Lt. Cmdr. Morav, Lt. Cmdr. Hughes, Lt. Cmdr. Purrva, Lt. Cmdr. Ra'asch, Cpt. Boreale, Lt. Ryan, Lt. Terrh'vnau. Though the least senior Lt. Cmdr., Ra'asch is the Fearless' Second Officer, and so should be seated to the Captain's left. By pure propriety, Prim and Morav should be seated on opposite ends of the table, with Prim on the starboard end and Morav on the port end, but this is not an absolute rule.))

Captain Arthur enters the meeting room, and sits in the head chair

Corsa Walked in, nodded at the captain, and sat down, folding his hands in front of him. He proceeded to simply stare into space ahead of him.

Commander Williams walked in approached the replicator.

"Coffee, strong"

Williams took the coffee and sat at his seat next to the Captain with a pad in hand going over the mission parameters.

Formik walked into the meeting room and nodded respectfully to Captain Arthur.

"Captain."

Before taking a seat and waiting patiently for the remainder of the attendees to arrive. Given Captain Arthur's earlier speech and behavior, he was very curious to see how he conducted his staff meetings.

In the eight hours since the ship had gotten underway, he'd checked on Sallers to ensure that the overworked Ensign was actually getting the rest she had earned, and sorted out his department's watchbills for its three divisions. So far, he had no complaints from the beings under his command. He hoped they could say the same of him.

Chief Petty Officer Ellis carefully stepped into the Officers briefing room and looked around for a seat. He had no idea why the Captain had asked him to the meeting, he could only assume it was related to the recent events in Engineering and how the new engines were coping with them.

Ellis re-focused himself and walked towards the replicator.
“Java, double sweet, with milk”

He collected his mug from the replicator and took the closest available seat, avoiding eye contact with any of the officers at the table. He didn’t want the ruffle any more feathers this early in his assignment.

At precisely 0715, Marine Captain Boreale marched into the ready room, wearing his service uniform, which was identical to the current Starfleet uniform in form, with Marine Khaki as the division color, and khaki instead of black pants. His chest sported an impressive array of ribbons, rivaled only by the mass of ribbons that adorned the chest of of Lt. Commander Morav, though Boreale sported more combat decorations than the Chief Science Officer. He came to full attention with parade sharpness a short distance to Arthur's side, and snapped the Fearless' Captain a crisp salute. "Marine Commander Captain Boreale, reporting as ordered, sir!" he stated, in what the Marines considered to be an inside voice.

Rising up from his seat and turning as he rose to shake the Marine Commanders hand

"Boreale, fantastic to finally meet you, its a pleasure to have you and your company aboard."

Dr Prim walked into the Briefing Room and took a seat next to Corsa, giving the Marine Captain a wide berth. He felt most comfortable sitting next to fellow beings of science and research. He could tolerate Tactical and Security Officers to an extent (after all, they were Starfleet Officers and had at least been exposed to non-combat training), but he had a hard time working with Marines.

Prim waited for the Captain to begin the briefing. In the meantime, he occupied himself with a PADD that listed his preliminary preparations on administering the Starfleet Medical trials (in case the subject came up in the meeting). He looked through the information for what seemed like the hundredth time, still trying in vain to figure out a way to expand the initial trial group beyond Corsa and Captain Arthur without ending up in a situation where he might need to forcibly inject a test subject. He had spent hours on the problem and was no closer to a solution.

He waited to see what the Captain had in store for the crew.

Corsa took in what he could glean from the situation.

The captain he knew something of, so he focused on getting what he could out of the others, the impersonal first officer who felt it appropriate to have drinks at staff meetings, the nervous enlisted man who took cues to try to fit in unnoticed, the tactical officer who arrived conspicuously early, the doctor who picked the seat next to his, the absent ops and helm officers.

From each he tried to learn a bit about his fellow officers. Jerry, was of course, predictably late, or at least not early. He looked forward to seeing an old acquaintance, especially one he'd shared such notable mischief with.

Ellis sat patiently sipping his Coffee while the Catian glared at him from across the table. This was the welcome that he had anticipated on entering the Officers briefing room. He continued to drink his coffee and prepare a short talk on how the engines had been performing so far, his eats still ringing from the loud Marine.

I hate marines he thought to himself.

"It's a pleasure to be here, sir," Boreale said, dropping his hand from a salute to a handshake. He nodded to the Captain, and turned to find a seat. Not seeing the Chief of Security present yet, he deliberately walked around the table and sat next to Dr. Prim, having noticed the doctor's avoidance of him.

After shaking the Marines hand, Captain Arthur turned and stood behind his chair, placing both hands on the top of it, folding them and speaking.

"Gentlemen, I know everyone isn't here yet however some of what I have to address doesn't need to occupy everyone's time this morning, so let's begin and I will fill in the missing Chief's as they arrive. We are press for time in this operation, so I'll hit the high notes quickly."

Arthur, ever the diplomatic meeting holder made face time with everyone in the room, and eye contact. Arthur noticed the obvious tension in the room.

In 20 years of Starfleet I've never seen such a group of people who either love or hate each other, such tension will be sharp at first, however miracles can happen.

"The Fearless has been assigned to CruRon 597, in Task Group 56, under Task Force 17, within Escort Wing 23, reporting to Commodore Arrlak. I've never worked closely with Arrlak before, however I have no concerns about this. We are en route to rendezvous with a bulk freighter carrying the reactors at the Cardassian fleet station at Ashcarl, and escort it to Frieja VI. Now pirates in the region have been attacking transports, however they use guerrilla style tactics, hit and run, never attacking the same spot too many times.

Now, of a personal note that I will not explain again, the USS Fearless is one ship, she has one Captain, and ONE CREW to serve her. There is NO separation of Marine and Starfleet Officer, we are a CREW, we are a team and I expect to see us operate in the capacity."

Turning to the Marine Commander

"Captain Boreale, I want a handpicked team on standby. More then likely IF we run into the pirates they will either scurry off in a hurry or avoid us altogether. IF we can get in a fast enough shot to get their shields down, I want a small group ready to deploy, they should focus on capturing the ship and taking her as a prize. The details of how this is done I leave to your discretion. History of the region shows however that most likely once the Pirates see the Fearless next to the escort, they might not even bother at all."

Turning his attention back to the room in general

"We will not break off of the escort for any reason, our goal is to get the cargo delivered, not to hunt Pirates, but I will cease any opportunities we can get within that scope. Secondly, Starfleet Intelligence has given us some information about an arms ring in the Loucarf System, however its a jaunt from Freija to Loucarf, but if we can make it close enough we might get some information on the smugglers that plague the system."

Nodding in the direction of Lt. Cmdr. Morav

"Corsa keep your ears to the wind during this entire operation, Pirates are a superstitious and cowardly lot, they might be leaving clues behind even if they don't show up."

Looking back to the Engineer who was minding a cup of coffee

"Ellis, isn't it? Congrats to the Engineering Team for our hustled departure, that was unplanned and I am pleased with our response time. Keep us efficient down there as we are going to be pushing the envelope if we can make the arms deal."

Finally directing his gaze on his good friend and confidant

"Dr. Primm, if the Cardassians are attacked, we might need to assist with wounded, be sure to be ready for dispatch. Also, before I dismiss present company, how is Sallers pulling along?"

Doctor Prim stood up to better address the room, pushing his chair back with his left leg to give himself room to stand. It wasn't strictly necessary to stand of course, but Jonell considered it a common courtesy.

As he stood up, he felt a sensation similar to that of blood rushing to his head. He did not feel up to full health, and he panicked briefly as an alarming thought occurred to him. In a rare moment of clarity regarding the orders from Starfleet Medical, he had injected himself with the nanites from Starfleet Medical earlier this morning. Since getting the orders, Prim had had trouble keeping his thoughts focused as he weighed the terrible options available to him. Talking to the Admiral had done no good, if anything it had made matters worse. So far, the clearest decision he had made was when he decided (after putting on his uniform this morning) to inject himself first. It probably wasn't the soundest medical decision, because if it caused complications in his body, the ship could lose its CMO and nobody would know why, at least not right away. He would tell the Captain right after the briefing just to be safe. He would also head directly back to sickbay and allow Doctor Sofek to examine him, in case the nanites were indeed to blame. He had hoped to avoid sharing his ethical and moral burden with his colleague and friend, but it would be necessary to tell him now. Keeping Sofek in the dark would be reckless and irresponsible. On a positive note, being Vulcan, Sofek would almost certainly weigh the orders calmly and logically. Maybe Prim was worried for nothing.

Prim turned to the Captain and gave an update on Ensign Sallers. "Captain, I'm happy to report that Ensign Sallers is recovering nicely. Once she has a solid shift or two's worth of rest, she should be back to normal."

He paused and a bit of an edge came back to his voice. "I would like to make a request, however. Sallers is not an Android, nor is anyone else on board to my knowledge. If the crew is going to be working far beyond their duty shifts, we're going to have more collapses, either from stimulant overdoses or exhaustion. Can we please keep these completely avoidable medical problems to a minimum? I expect sickbay to soon be busy with serious medical cases, so I would like-". Before Prim could continue his tirade, he reached his hands up in an attempt to stifle a sudden fit of coughing. As he pulled his hands away, he noticed blood on them, and felt the metallic taste of blood on his tongue and mouth. Why was he coughing up blood? "I'm sorry everyone, it appears I need medical-". Before he could finish, Prim's eyes rolled back in their sockets, and he fell forward, hitting his head on the conference table and crumpling to the ground. The impact on the table wasn't enough to break his skin, but a large bruise was visible where his forehead had tried to get friendly with the edge of the table.

The doctor was unconscious, or worse.

Without skipping a beat Morav kneeled down to the floor. "Doctor? Doctor" he called, firmly, tapping on Prim's collar bone. Seeing no response and fearing fluid accumulation, he rolled Dr. Prim on his side and tilted his head back.

"Morav to sick bay, medical emergency in the briefing room" he called. He put an ear to the doctor's mouth and listened for breathing before checking for a pulse.

Lt. Commander Ra'asch listened to the Captain's briefing intently. None of this was news to him. This entire sector of space still had major policing issues, he'd learned that when aboard the Stormchild and had to patrol other parts of Cardassian space. Granted pirates didn't usually attack Federation starships, at least not the big ones, in his experience. No, the starships had to go to them and from the sounds of it they'd be staying fairly close to their charge on this mission. It would be a bold pirate indeed to come out and launch an attack on an escorted freighter. That, he mused, or an extremely well armed and or clever one.

He was still considering defensive scenarios when Ensign Sallers' name came up in the conversation. He'd visited her in sickbay already and knew her condition first hand. She'd been in good hands at least, though she'd been suffering from some mild hallucinations thanks to the withdrawal. A case in point, she'd seen a fuzzy hat atop of Formik's head and even tried reaching for it before coming to her senses. That had been interesting to say the least and had driven home what Doctor Prim had just affirmed. She needed rest. She'd earned it.

Then the good Doctor took his tumble and slammed his head onto the briefing room table, leaving a trace of blood behind. Formik blinked in surprise and had just enough time to see that the blood wasn't from a head wound but had come from Doctor's mouth. A part of his mind registered in somewhat macabre humor that this crew was developing a propensity for fainting upon conversation with the Captain.

While he wasn't the closest to the Doctor having been seated further down the table from his position, he struck his com badge and added detail to the medical report already issued: "Medical team to the Officer's Briefing Room, Doctor Prim appears to have fainted and is suffering from oral hemorrhaging." This was his second call to medical aboard this ship. He hoped this wasn't going to be a recurring theme of his time aboard the Fearless.

Morav's instincts as a combat medic quickly gave way to his time as a disease expert. Prim wouldn't have been cleared for duty on a starship unless he had been thoroughly cleared medically, as with any officer, and medically healthy people didn't keel over for no reason.

"Morav to sickbay, hold off on sending a team up and beam me a medical tricorder. Prim's gotten around a lot lately; we should make sure we're not dealing with a pathogen here before anyone else comes in contact with him".

He turned to the rest of the room. "Everyone else back off and stay put".

"Transporter chief to Briefing Room, the medical team is already on their way."

A medical team beamed in less than 30 seconds after the call went out from the Briefing Room. They responded well enough, but it wasn't their best time. It seemed that almost everyone in each department was still getting their "sea legs".

The team was led by Nurse Jaklan. He was accompanied by two noncom medical aides.

Jaklan and the aides headed straight for Doctor Prim, and after Lt Commander Morav stepped aside to let him in, Jaklan knelt down to take a scan with his medical tricorder.

He spoke up, addressing the Captain as he scanned. "Captain Arthur, his bleeding has stopped for the moment. It looks like something that I cannot identify has altered Doctor Prim's genetic structure somehow." He stopped, and looked up at the Captain with a look of horrified incredulity. "Sir, this should be impossible, but I am detecting what appears to be an embryonic Trill symbiont in his body." He paused briefly to allow his words a moment to sink in. "His altered genetic structure is forming a symbiont, and his body is trying to join with it. I am no expert on Trill physiology, but I do not believe embryonic symbionts are able to join with a host body, as they are too early in their life stages for that process to be successful. The attempted joining is what caused his bleeding, and it has also sent him into a coma. We cannot do anything more here, we will need to bring him back to sickbay for observation."

Jaklan made sure Prim was as stable as possible for transport, then he tapped his commbadge. "Ensign Jaklan to transporter room 1, beam Dr Prim and the medical team directly to sickbay." After a few seconds, the group beamed out and the room was back to relative normal.

Almost on cue, a noncom crewman entered the Briefing Room and silently began cleaning and sterilizing the part of the desk Doctor Prim had hit, as well as the bloodstains he had left on the floor and his chair.

[OOC EDIT: Sorry, it took me a while to write this up and didn't want to change everything to accommodate Catamount's post.]

Formik tensed at the realization that there might be a pathogen involved in Doctor Prim's collapse.

Growing up in a subterranean civilization you developed a healthy fear of disease if you intended to survive. It spread quickly in the tightly packed environments of the tunnels and caverns. However his Starfleet training got the better of his natural instinct and he remained where he was, seated calmly while the medical team beamed in and conducted their examination. The only sign of his case of nerves were his tightly clasped hands on the table and the swishing of his brain-tail as the tattoos around his scalp pulsed with the shifting of his skin.

His black eyes remained focused on the unconscious Doctor as the medical team beamed away with their latest charge.

Formik's gaze returned to the Captain curiously, wondering if the briefing would continue now that one of the senior staff had been stricken from the gathering so dramatically.

[OOC: understandable, but the CSO and CMO are going to have a "little chat" about medical procedure later on ;)]

As the team beamed in, Corsa turned to the medical team, irate. "God dammit ensign! I said to hold! You'd better hope I'm wrong. Well now that you're here..."

Corsa stepped back and motioned toward the doctor.

"Just don't let any fluids touch you until you've scanned him".

As they beamed away, Dr Prim's ailment confirmed, Corsa returned to his seat, having nothing left to do for the doctor.

Captain Arthurs hand was the 3rd fastest one in the room, however after tapping his comm badge Corsa was already kneeling over the Doctor and calling for assistance, as was Ra'Asch as well. The rest of the room seemed to sit in a fearful silence.

The Captain folded his hands behind his back as Corsa stood up and then the beamed in emergency crew left with The Doctor, eyes in the room seeming to return to him.

"Gentlemen" Arthurs voice seemed distant, this was a crossroads and a moment where he was casting the foundation with this new crew.

"....that will be all as far as this meeting goes."

Arthur paused for 10 seconds of silence

"That man, I consider to be one of my best friends in the known universe, however we have a mission and we will accomplish it. If you have anything to address with me, you know where I'll be. Mister Williams take the Bridge, Mister Morav please come with me. Dismissed."

Captain Arthur stood up and walked to the exit of the room, returning to the Main Bridge and walking towards the Turbo Lift
