Small tidbit from Jonathan Frakes. Picard will not be in Starfleet and he isn't allowed to disclose what his role (Rikers) will be in the series.

Sounds like he will at least return as an actor. Thing is Frakes is very active now directing and has done two more episodes for Discovery this season. Easy to see returning to the chair for a couple of episodes in this series.

Another interesting point to note. CBS have been active recently trademarking new names all attached to video content/streaming multimedia aka TV shows. The names consist of Star Trek Desiny, Revolution, Starfleet Academy, Reliant and Ceti Alpha V. Lower Decks was recently announced and trademarked at a similar timeframe to this lot.

This is interesting for a couple of reasons. We know rumored shows included a short series about Kahn and a Starfleet Academy teen drama show. Both of those remarkably are covered here totally. Revolution and Destiny though are the unknown ones, many pen Destiny as the Picard series. The Section 31 series doesn't have a name yet either. So we have three upcoming shows Reliant, Revolution and Destiny as of yet assigned to anything.

I think that's reading too much into it. Frakes saying he can't talk about it doesn't mean he's in the show. That could easily be true for a director as well. I hope Riker DOES show up but the way Frakes keeps saying "everyone would love to come back" makes it sound like he's part of that group.

I thought everybody already assumed Picard would no longer be in Starfleet - that has been hinted at from the beginning. I could see him being an ambassador or a teacher or something. I think the ambassador role is less likely, since Patrick is involved in the production and he probably thinks that's "boring". I would expect he's in charge of some exciting project or something.

Again, depends on if the events of the comics in the run up to 09 are Canon. If so he has at least served as an ambassador prior to this point, whether that continues however is another question entirely. Hell could be the adventures of archeologist Picard for all we know.

And yes very true about Frakes, probably me reading too optimistically into it.

David Mack one of the leading star trek authors has announced he is consulting on Lower Decks but also another to be announced animated series. We know the to be announced series is Nickelodeon’s series but we know very little about it other then the premise being some teenagers find a ship and go joyriding.

I really don't know how I feel about Lower Decks...

Much more interesting to see "Flag Bridge" than some story about a bunch of lower ranked fools.

Some updates because Picard Premiere was last night and people talk.

Picard has been renewed for Season 2 already. Apparently Stewart is on a 3 season contract, so outside of the first season being completely shit I’m expecting them to use all three seasons. Picard begins next Friday.

Discovery has also apparently been green lit for Season 4 which rumours are indicating to be its last, time will tell on that. Season 3 set for Fall.

The Georgiou/Section 31 series continues in development, no updates though really.

Both animated series are well on track.

Meanwhile Kurtzman let slip that their are two other unannounced live action series being worked on. We know Kahn is on hold, heard nothing about the Starfleet Academy rumour from times past. I’m a bit stumped, they might opt for a full Pike series which could work but there were apparent issues around that. Or a 25th Century series to jump off of Picard. It’s unknown, they’ve said they don’t want two shows running consecutively that have the same premise and with Discovery running it knocks out a “traditional” Trek if you will or could call it that. The two series may never be announced or like Section 31 still be quite some time away.

I'm still not sold on the Sec31 show, or why we even need it... everything else I'll give a taste test.

Agreed with Surlaw. Discovery really made me feel fatigued on Section 31. Even the S31 arc in Enterprise felt a little...pushy.

Word on the street is that a Pike series is in the works, though. Great! His character really came off nicely in Discovery. I especially loved the exchange between Pike and Cornwell:

Pike: "Giving up our values in the name of security is to lose the battle in advance. I'm curious. Did you sideline the Enterprise because you knew I'd never stop reminding you of that?
Cornwell: "You sat out the war because if we'd lost to the Klingons, we wanted the best of Starfleet to survive. And as this conversation makes clear, that was you and all you represent."

More of that, please.

Pike was a life saver for me on this show, Sec31 and Mirror Universe stuff never does it for me, but Pike coming on was so great that it allowed time for me to get my head wrapped around the character of Mike enough to really enjoy her.

The writing also, at times, went above and beyond, when they first said Mike said something to Spock so horrible it ruined their relationship I thought pffffff whatever. But then when they showed the scene I was choked up with emotion, so they can nail the delivery at times.

I loved Pike, I am totally on board with a Pike Enterprise show. Thing is earlier last month a Star Trek: Enterprise appeared on the Canada film site that basically appears for shows getting ready to go into production which makes sense with so much of it filmed in Vancouver.

Yeah Enterprise is confusing, but it would appear confusing but that is what most people think its referencing unless they've decided to do another season/film on the Enterprise show (Which isn't impossible tbh..) however that must be unlikely.

I'd also hope the Pike show would be more traditional trek in the sense of a different adventure each week but expect to be disappointed.

And Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has now been formally announced which so far comprises Pike, Spock and Number One following the conclusion of Discovery Season 2 on the USS Enterprise.

As I said to Surlaw, if this show is actually about exploration, I'll put my money where my mouth is and subscribe to CBS AA (at least temporarily) to check it out. The biggest reason I gave up on Disco after the first 2 free episodes (and why I never bothered with the free month that Patrick Stewart later advertised), and why I never bothered with Star Trek Picard, was the weird focus on being something other than Trek. So if "Strange New Worlds" actually does what's advertised in the title, sign me up. I have my doubts given the people involved behind the scenes, but I'll give it a shot.
